Average time to organise*

 

Step 1: Preparing to buy and sell a home

  • Budget for your move
  • Value your current property
  • Get a mortgage agreement in principle
  • Get an initial insurance quote
  • Organise your legals for the house you are selling
1 - 2 weeks
Step 2: Finding a buyer

  • Prepare your property for sale
  • Put your property on the market
  • Accept an offer on your property
  • Appoint a solicitor

4 - 10 weeks
Step 3: Finding a property
  • Find property through an estate agent
  • Arrange a survey
  • Confirm your offer price
  • Appoint a solicitor
  • Arrange an exchange date

 

4 - 10 weeks
Step 4: Exchanging Contracts
  • Organise your deposit
  • Book your buildings insurance
  • Fill out your fixtures and fittings form
  • Sign the contracts
    (This is normally "the point of no return", when both parties become legally committed and neither can back out thereafter. You will normally have to pay a 10% deposit of the purchase price on exchange of contracts. You can expect to have to find this from your own savings as the mortgage advance is not released until completion.)

4 - 16 weeks
Step 5: Completing Contracts
(usually 2 weeks from exchange)
  • Organise and book your removals
  • Prepare final monies
  • Organise utilities (incl meter readings) Requires 10 days notice
  • Consider Post Office redirection Requires 10 days notice
  • Notify of change of address

 

6 - 20 weeks
 
 
 
Step 6: Moving in Day
  • Sort out cleaning for both properties
  • Put kids and animals with friends
  • Take meter readings and report to utility companies
